Professor Zeng Zhi visited our institute to deliver a lecture on leadership in the new era.
“Journey to the West,” “Romance of the Three Kingdoms,” Zhu Yuanzhang, Wang Yong, the SF Express delivery driver, the evolution of trains and high-speed rail, the Russia–Ukraine conflict—these seemingly unrelated stories, figures, case studies, and current events were skillfully woven together by Zeng Zhi, a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Health Economics and Management of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Drawing on the distinctive features of hospital organizational structures, he delivered a special lecture to senior and mid-level managers and key departmental leaders at Nanjing Zijin Hospital, focusing on “Cultivating Exceptional Leadership in the New Era and Enhancing Effective Execution.” The entire afternoon-long session was not only engaging and entertaining but also profoundly thought‑provoking.
“If it weren’t for the organization’s orders, Sun Wukong would have long since returned to Flower Fruit Mountain, Zhu Bajie to Gao Laozhuang, and Sha Wujing to the River of Flowing Sand. In that case, the master and his disciples wouldn’t be a team at all—at best, they’d just be a gang!”
“The definition of love is evolving, and in today’s society, the definition of leadership is changing as well…”
“The fall of the Ming dynasty was an inevitable trend; Emperor Chongzhen might have been a capable ruler…”

Drawing on the contemporary context of modern management and using the governance approaches of several late Ming emperors as illustrative case studies, Professor Zeng offered an in-depth analysis and exposition on cultivating and enhancing leadership effectiveness. Integrating a wealth of historical allusions and real-world examples with today’s workplace realities, he drew on his own experiences to provide a comprehensive exploration of the concepts of leadership and leadership capability, strategies for developing essential leader qualities, and ways to refine managerial practices. He also outlined concrete tactics for strengthening team cohesion and boosting high‑performing execution.
Professor Zeng’s vast erudition and wide-ranging insights were captivating, while his profound observations invited deep reflection. His witty and humorous teaching style kept the participants thoroughly engaged, filling the lecture hall with laughter and ensuring that, in a joyful atmosphere, they not only mastered valuable skills but also enriched themselves.
This lecture profoundly underscored for the hospital management leaders and departmental core personnel in attendance that an outstanding medical team and a high‑quality healthcare institution alike require both a visionary leader with exceptional leadership skills and a cohesive, highly effective team—neither can afford to be missing. Moving forward, Nanjing Zijin Hospital will uphold sound talent‑management principles, articulate clear managerial objectives, refine its performance‑evaluation system, and establish a scientifically designed incentive framework, thereby sustaining a spirit of innovation and robust momentum for continued growth.
