The “Second Eastern Conference on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Yangtze River Delta Smart Rehabilitation Specialist Alliance Meeting,” co-hosted by the Shanghai Medical Association and the Shanghai Branch of the Specialty Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and supported by the Yangtze River Delta Smart Rehabilitation Specialist Alliance, was held in Shanghai on June 22–23, 2024.

Concurrently with the conference, a rehabilitation therapy skills competition, a rehabilitation team case‑report contest, and an outstanding young researchers’ paper competition will be held, aiming to provide a platform for participants to exchange ideas, enhance their expertise, deepen mutual understanding, foster camaraderie, and jointly advance the vigorous development of rehabilitation services across the Yangtze River Delta region and throughout the country.

Our hospital selected four young teams: the Case Report Competition team (Ji Hong, Huo Xinran, Guo Chengcheng) and (Luo Jing, Xue Sichi, Xia Mengping); and the Skills Competition team (Wang Chao, Chen Xinyi, Geng Tao, Yang Wenkai) and (Wu Shanshan, Xing Wei, Chu Jun, Li Caiqian). Despite their youthful inexperience, these teams showed remarkable courage and determination. After fierce competition, they steadily advanced, overcoming numerous challenges and emerging victorious from among 156 participants representing 44 skills‑competition teams and 114 participants from 38 case‑report teams—each hailing from leading hospitals across the country. Rehabilitation Therapy Skills Competition

The rules of the Rehabilitation Therapy Skills Competition stipulate that each team randomly draws a competition topic and, based on that topic, conducts on-site demonstrations of skills including rehabilitation history taking, functional assessment, treatment plan design and presentation, as well as explanations of the underlying pathology and associated functional impairments. Our hospital’s competing team was assigned Topic No. 6. Following the standard clinical rehabilitation workflow, the three team members, according to their assigned roles, performed the three skill modules—history taking, assessment, and treatment—and answered questions. With high spirits and exceptional technical proficiency, the team delivered a high‑quality demonstration, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Rehabilitation Team Case Report

At the Rehabilitation Team Case Report Competition, our hospital’s rehabilitation team presented a detailed report on a case of delayed encephalopathy following carbon monoxide poisoning, covering the patient’s clinical course, physical examination findings, rehabilitation assessment, clinical and functional diagnoses, the development and implementation of a rehabilitation plan, and treatment outcomes. Throughout the presentation, the contestants demonstrated a clear diagnostic and therapeutic approach, seamless collaboration among the medical, nursing, and therapy teams, and a personalized rehabilitation strategy, earning high praise from the panel of judges.

During the preparation period, the contestants meticulously reviewed the competition rules and detailed guidelines, scoured for a wide range of problems, and engaged in repeated simulation exercises, all while devising a rigorous training schedule. With clinical duties at the hospital remaining constant, team members carried out their rehabilitation therapy during the day and then devoted their evenings to intensive theoretical simulations and hands-on practice. Nevertheless, their efforts paid off: on competition day, the participants showcased outstanding performance and secured two third-place awards in both categories!

This time, “Shanghai Beach” won two third-place awards, which not only recognizes our hospital’s expertise in rehabilitation but also serves as an incentive for us to continuously elevate our technical standards. By using competitions to promote learning, training, and practical application, we will further strengthen our rehabilitation workforce and enhance the quality of rehabilitation services.
