From then on, he stayed by Liu Lulu’s side every single day, accompanying her through all her treatments. To prevent his wife’s nerves from atrophying, Xu Jinjie taught himself massage techniques and patiently massaged her for hours on end. His care and patience did not go unnoticed; everyone in the ward took notice. Many family members would ask him, out of curiosity, how he managed to keep it up so consistently. He would simply smile and reply in his straightforward manner: “We just take each day as it comes.”

No matter how great the hardships he faces, Xu Jinjie always maintains an optimistic outlook, with a warm smile always on his face. As he massages his wife, he softly chats with her, sharing amusing stories about their son and daughter and recounting the little moments of everyday life. “I figure that the more I talk to her about things at home, the more it might help stimulate her awareness. To help her recover better, I even bring our daughter, who’s in kindergarten, along, hoping her voice will wake her mother up,” Xu Jinjie says, his eyes shining with hope. “I’ve always believed she’ll wake up—she definitely will!”

This steadfast love finally found its answer one day. “One day, she suddenly smiled at me!” Xu Jinjie recalled that thrilling moment, still unable to hide his excitement. Though he could no longer remember the exact date, Liu Lulu’s slightly upturned lips were like a ray of dawn in the darkness, forever etched in his heart. Overjoyed, he immediately called for the doctor. After examining her, the doctor told him that Liu Lulu’s condition was steadily improving; though it was only an unconscious smile, it was a positive sign, and a full recovery might not be far off. And sure enough, just as the New Year of 2022 approached, Liu Lulu truly woke up!
