At the start of the new year, hearts are filled with love. On January 2–3, 2025, Nanjing Zijin Hospital organized a voluntary blood‑donation drive, during which 163 members of the hospital community donated over 50,000 milliliters of life‑saving blood, offering a warm and precious New Year gift to those in need.

Dr. Wu Yulian, who was off duty that day, arrived early to donate blood. A traditional Chinese medicine physician in the Rehabilitation Department, she had already participated in the hospital’s blood‑donation drive last year. “We’re all aware that blood supplies tend to be tight in winter. Moreover, ‘Sincerity and Excellence, Benevolence and Vision’ is our hospital’s motto—a guiding ethos, if you will. As medical professionals, we want to do our part to help patients.”

Among those who came to donate blood that day, many were familiar faces. For medical staff, donating blood has become a habit: “Seeing so many patients in need of blood, and knowing that I’m in good health myself, I want to give back by helping others,” said Chen Sisi, a nurse who is participating in voluntary blood donation for the fourth time.

In addition to the staff, family members also took an active part: upon learning that her younger sister’s hospital was organizing a blood drive, the elder sister made a special trip from school; and one husband even rolled up his sleeves alongside his wife.

Starting the new year with a spirit of dedication has been a longstanding tradition at Nanjing Zijin Hospital. According to the hospital’s president, Ge Jiangping, as early as late last year, the hospital repeatedly issued calls for voluntary blood donation to all staff, and employees from every department eagerly signed up. “Working on the clinical front lines, we are acutely aware of the vital importance of blood to patients—especially those in critical condition.”

As the Spring Festival approaches, we are entering the traditional “low season” for blood donation—yet at the same time, medical institutions are experiencing a peak in clinical blood demand. We hereby appeal to caring individuals from all sectors of society to actively participate in blood donation, bringing hope for life to patients in need.
