On November 13, 2015, the “National Symposium on Emergency and Critical Care Toxicology” was held in Nanjing, hosted by the Nanjing General Hospital of the Nanjing Military Region.

　　More than ten physicians from our hospital attended the academic conference and delivered lectures. On November 14, President Wang Peidong gave a scholarly lecture titled “Recent Advances in Disorders of Consciousness” to the attending delegates at the Nanjing Zhongshan Hotel.

　　Dean Wang Peidong pointed out that the treatment approach for the vegetative state with Chinese characteristics employs hyperbaric oxygen therapy in combination with the X protocol.

　　At the lecture, Dean Wang Peidong highlighted transcranial electrical stimulation—a painless, noninvasive, and environmentally friendly therapeutic approach that is the subject of a new study at Harvard Medical School. By applying noninvasive electrodes to deliver electrical currents to specific brain regions, this technique—known as transcranial electrical stimulation—has been gaining increasing recognition in clinical settings for enhancing cognitive functions such as attention, language, memory, reasoning, emotion regulation, and motor coordination. Owing to its painless, non‑traumatic physical properties, it holds the promise of realizing humanity’s longstanding aspiration: unraveling the mysteries of brain function and higher‑order cognitive processes.

　　Our hospital is currently implementing this technology, offering new hope to patients with disorders of consciousness, including those in a vegetative state.
