Recently, a carefully printed letter of thanks and a banner were presented to the Jiangning Ward of Nanjing Zijin Hospital. The sender was Lu Erhu, the father of patient Lu Mengxian, who wished to express his family’s gratitude to all the medical staff at Nanjing Zijin Hospital in this manner.

In February this year, patient Lu Mengxian was admitted to Nanjing Zijin Hospital following surgery for a traumatic brain injury, in a state of near-complete unconsciousness—commonly referred to as a “vegetative state.” The hospital convened multiple expert consultations and meticulously developed a treatment plan, leading to steady improvement in his condition. He is now fully conscious, able to engage in normal communication, and his limb functions are gradually recovering.

Recently, Lu Mengxian was transferred to another hospital for cranial reconstruction surgery. Prior to the transfer, his family specially presented a letter of gratitude and stated that, following the procedure, he would return to Nanjing Zijin Hospital for follow-up treatment and rehabilitation.

At Nanjing Zijin Hospital, almost no one is unfamiliar with the name “Lu Mengxian.” As they read the letter of gratitude sent by her father, everyone was even more delighted to witness her gradual recovery and journey toward health.

Hello everyone! As the father of patient Lu Mengxian, over the past seven-plus months, I have personally witnessed how you helped a “vegetative state” patient with no spontaneous consciousness gradually regain awareness and embark on a journey toward better health. As Lu Mengxian is about to be discharged, please allow me, on behalf of our entire family, to express our heartfelt gratitude: Thank you!

On the afternoon of January 22 this year, while riding my bike with my daughter, Lu Mengxian, near Daming Road, I suddenly and inexplicably fell. Both of us lost consciousness. After a few minutes, I came to and found that my daughter had been badly injured. With the help of a passing police officer, she was rushed to a major hospital for examination, where she was diagnosed with severe traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and multiple skull fractures. She underwent surgery that same day. Although her life was saved, she remained unconscious. After consulting with one another, our family decided to transfer her to Nanjing Zijin Hospital.

After my daughter was admitted, she received meticulous treatment and care. Upon learning of her condition, President Wang Peidong convened multiple expert consultations to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. Attending physician, Chief Physician Liu Yafeng, not only devoted considerable effort to arranging her care but also showed deep concern for our family’s circumstances. When he discovered that my daughter lacked medical insurance and that our family faced severe financial hardship and could not afford the medical expenses, he promptly reported the situation to the hospital leadership. Vice President Ge Jiangping, upon learning of this, instructed the hospital office staff to help us find a solution. Guided by the office staff, we launched a “QingSongChou” fundraising campaign. President Ge, along with numerous hospital medical professionals, generously donated and shared the fundraising link. With the enthusiastic support of my daughter’s school administrators, teachers, classmates, and parents, we raised 400,000 yuan in just over a week. Head Nurse Li Yinzhi of Ward 104, together with several bedside nurses, learned about our family’s situation and went above and beyond their duties to offer thoughtful assistance and attentive care.

With the help and encouragement of all the medical staff at Nanjing Zijin Hospital, we gradually emerged from despair. As the doctors had predicted, my daughter’s condition improved day by day, and she regained consciousness after 78 days in a coma. Following further treatment and rehabilitation, Lu Mengxian is now fully alert, able to engage in normal verbal communication, recognize simple English words and phrases, use her fingers to indicate numbers, and perform basic calculations.

Without the thoughtful organization and leadership of the hospital administration, and the meticulous care provided by all the medical staff, we can scarcely imagine what our daughter would have endured. Thankfully, your skillful expertise and compassionate hearts have steadily improved her condition; your family‑like care has eased our pain and anxiety; and your boundless kindness has helped alleviate the heavy financial burden we faced. On behalf of our entire family, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you.
