Recently, Nanjing Zijin Hospital received a five-page letter of gratitude, penned in neat handwriting to express heartfelt thanks to a team of medical staff. The letter was written by patient Grandpa Cai, Grandma Jiang, and their family.
 

According to Zheng Bing, the attending physician for both elderly patients: Grandpa Cai and Grandma Jiang are 74 and 69 years old, respectively. One day in January this year, while crossing the street, they were struck by a passenger car. On February 8, Grandma Jiang was admitted first to Nanjing Zijin Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with multiple injuries all over her body, limited mobility in her left lower limb, and an inability to walk. Two days later, Grandpa Cai was also transferred to Nanjing Zijin Hospital; his condition was far more severe than his wife’s: at the time, he remained unconscious, with only minimal consciousness, and was found to have diffuse axonal injury, a tibiofibular fracture of the left lower limb, and a fracture of the left ankle, among other injuries.

In response to the medical conditions of the two elderly patients, the hospital developed tailored treatment plans: Grandma Jiang received hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with pharmacological treatment, along with rehabilitation and training; Grandpa Cai was provided with awakening-promoting and rehabilitation therapies. During this period, Grandpa Cai also developed a urinary tract infection, a pulmonary infection, and hypoproteinemia, all of which were successfully managed under the meticulous care of the medical team.

Following ongoing treatment, Grandma Jiang, who had been confined to bed and unable to walk, is now able to ambulate independently and manage all aspects of daily living on her own. Grandpa Cai has also emerged from his comatose state, regaining full mental clarity and resuming the ability to eat and engage in simple verbal exchanges. Upon discharge, both elderly patients, accompanied by their families, presented five embroidered banners and a lengthy letter detailing the intimate moments they shared with the medical staff during their hospital stay.

Upon receiving this five-page letter, many healthcare professionals were deeply moved. Going all out to relieve patients’ suffering and providing compassionate care—this is, after all, the very essence of our duty. Achieving positive outcomes would not have been possible without the active cooperation, unwavering trust, and understanding of our patients and their families. The fact that Grandpa Cai, Grandma Jiang, and their loved ones have truly seen and cherished every effort we’ve made is the highest honor we could receive. For this reason, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Grandpa Cai, Grandma Jiang, and their family.

Attachment: Excerpts from the Letter of Appreciation

During nearly six months of treatment at Nanjing Zijin Hospital, the contusions to my parents’ heads, necks, and legs have improved significantly. My mother can now walk in and out on her own, while my father, whose injuries were more severe, is now able to turn over independently. As their children, we hope that their physical functions will continue to improve. We are deeply grateful to Director Wang Xia, Director Sun Xilin, Director Fan of the Nursing Department, Physician Zheng Bing, and to all the nurses—especially Deputy Head Nurses Wang Yaqin and Li Min, as well as Zhu Lingling and Wu Anni—for their outstanding support and care.

My father had poor vascular elasticity, and by the end, only Deputy Head Nurse Wang Yaqin and Zhu Lingling could locate a vein for injections. Moreover, Wu Anni often joined me in caring for my father during his shifts, even patiently enduring “head-to-head” contact, all in an effort to keep him alert and able to speak.

What was most touching was that, to avoid causing my father any further harm, Wu Anni even tried the needle on herself. Her dedication and courage have earned my family’s heartfelt admiration. Wu Anni, you’re truly remarkable!

Even after my parents were discharged, whenever they went out to buy groceries or breakfast and happened to run into Deputy Head Nurse Wang Yaqin, she would always greet my mother warmly, offering kind words and heartfelt concern for my parents—truly full of compassion.
