Our hospital held a Duanwu Festival–themed zongzi‑making competition for rehabilitation patients.

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of China’s four major traditional festivals. To help inpatients experience the festive spirit, the Rehabilitation Therapy Center at Nanjing Zijin Hospital organized a zongzi‑making competition for its rehabilitation patients on the afternoon of June 19.

The therapist prepares the ingredients in advance: rinsed glutinous rice, fragrant zongzi leaves, washed red dates, peanuts, adzuki beans, raisins, and more.

During the event, the therapist specially presented patients and their families with five‑colored cords and scented sachets. The five‑colored cords symbolize blessings and good fortune, while the sachets are meant to ward off evil and dispel epidemics, with the hope that every patient will recover soon and return to their families.

The activity room was filled with laughter and the sweet aroma of zongzi. For patients who happen to be in need of hand‑function rehabilitation, making zongzi is an engaging task that subtly strengthens their hand skills while also uplifting their mind and body.

The zongzi were neatly wrapped and promptly delivered to the cafeteria for cooking. Moments later, they were ready—hot and steaming. The therapists wheeled small carts, carrying the fragrant, piping‑hot zongzi straight into the patient rooms.

This event not only brought the fragrant aroma of zongzi to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, but also allowed everyone to experience the deep bond between doctors and patients. Though small, the zongzi are soft and sticky, touching the heart of each person and letting the spirit of this traditional festival gently permeate the hearts of every patient and their family.
