The “Little Painter” in the Intensive Care Unit

In the intensive care unit of Nanjing Zijin Hospital, there’s a sweet little patient who wins everyone’s heart. To the nurses, she’s well-behaved and sensible—she doesn’t cry or fuss even when getting an injection. Even more surprisingly, she’s also a budding young artist.

Following surgery for a medullary tumor, Xiaoyuba developed quadriplegia and a pulmonary infection and continues to require intermittent ventilator support. On February 9, he was transferred to Nanjing Zijin Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit. Due to pandemic‑related restrictions, family members were unable to visit, so the nurses stepped in to serve as “temporary parents.”

When she was first admitted, little Yuba often felt down, missing her mother. Nurse Miao Xiaofei had a bright idea: she drew a Barbie doll by the bedside and asked Yuba to “help” add some color. To her surprise, this sparked Yuba’s creative enthusiasm, and the “little artist’s” first masterpiece was soon completed.

After that, Xiaoyuba began asking to draw every day, and the nurses brought her two sketchbooks. In just three days, she had finished them all, and now there are several more sketchbooks neatly arranged by her bedside.

As the youngest patient in the ICU, she is nonetheless the bravest warrior in the nurses’ hearts. In the eyes of Nurse Zhou Shimei, little Yubao concentrates intently when she’s drawing, and when she’s sad, she merely pouts—never shedding a tear.
