Lying in his hospital bed, the elderly man put on his commemorative medal.

On the afternoon of June 28, in a ward at Nanjing Zijin Hospital, 72-year-old Bao Yishun lay on his hospital bed as his family gently placed a “50 Years of Glory in the Party” commemorative medal around his neck. Though Mr. Bao was unable to speak, his eyes betrayed an uncontainable sense of emotion.

Bao Lao, a native of Huangmei Town in Jurong City, donned the military uniform in his youth to defend his country. After retiring from service, he returned to his hometown, Baojia Village, where he served as deputy secretary of the village Party branch for 22 years and now boasts 51 years of Party membership. As an ordinary Party member, he has always held himself to rigorous standards. Though he leads a frugal life, whenever earthquakes or epidemics strike China, he promptly and wholeheartedly contributes both money and supplies.

In April this year, Mr. Bao suffered a sudden fainting spell and fell, resulting in multiple cerebral hematomas and hemorrhages. Following emergency surgery, he remained in the intensive care unit for 56 days.

Upon receiving the “50 Years of Glory in the Party” commemorative medal, the family promptly brought it to the hospital to present it to the elderly man. Coincidentally, on that very day, Mr. Bao was transferred to a regular ward; upon seeing the gleaming medal, his eyes lit up with vitality. The Party’s centenary and the honor of “50 Years of Glory in the Party” must have bestowed upon him an invisible strength.
