“Thank you, Director Pan, thank you to the medical staff, and thank you to Nanjing Zijin Hospital!” January 22, 2021, was an extraordinary day for little Chen Ziye and his family. After eight full months of rehabilitation, Chen Ziye was finally able to be discharged and return home to Suzhou to continue his recovery. In gratitude, his family brought two embroidered banners to Nanjing Zijin Hospital to express their heartfelt thanks to Chief Physician Pan Xingming and the entire medical team.

　　On May 21, 2020, young patient Chen Ziyue was transferred to Nanjing Zijin Hospital for rehabilitation treatment. Over the past eight months, under the meticulous care of Director Pan and the medical team, Chen Ziyue has steadily improved day by day. From being completely unresponsive upon admission to now engaging in simple communication and interaction with his family; from being unable to move at all and confined to bed at the outset to now successfully completing a variety of limb‑strengthening exercises and fine‑motor tasks—every day, the ward has witnessed remarkable progress, and smiles have begun to light up the faces of Chen Ziyue’s family.

　　Throughout the entire rehabilitation period, Director Pan treated Chen Ziyue as his own child and developed a meticulous treatment and recovery plan. The regimen combined pharmacological therapy with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, acupuncture, massage, and other rehabilitative techniques—precise, effective, and well‑organized, with daily schedules calibrated down to the minute. In July last year, during an expert consultation, a rigorous assessment led to the preliminary conclusion that Chen Ziyue had largely regained consciousness. “The experts’ opinion confirms that our approach is on the right track,” Director Pan Xingming said with a smile, “but by my standards, further observation is still needed.” While maintaining strict adherence to treatment and rehabilitation protocols, Director Pan also paid close attention to the young patient’s psychological well‑being. Because prolonged hospitalization and intensive rehab can be monotonous and exhausting, he granted family members permission to bring Chen Ziyue home for short visits at regular intervals—both to provide a more relaxed setting and to leverage familiar surroundings in hopes of rekindling latent memories. “Please rest assured: whether the child remains in the hospital or returns home for continued recovery, I will personally oversee his progress one‑on‑one for the full two years,” Director Pan repeatedly pledged during discussions with the family.

　　The doctors are conscientious and responsible, and the medical staff are equally meticulous and caring. During each rounds, head nurse Kong Lingling is always exceptionally attentive: “How’s your temperature? How’s your appetite? Are you feeling any discomfort?” She patiently and repeatedly reviews the day’s treatment plan. For every examination and rehabilitation session, she carefully goes over the preparations and important precautions. Whenever she notices even the slightest improvement in Chen Ziyue, she becomes visibly thrilled. “I’ve treated many patients and seen all kinds of conditions,” she tells Chen Ziyue’s mother, “but no one has recovered this quickly or so well as he has—this is the first case I’ve encountered. I hope you both make a full recovery and can be discharged soon.” Throughout the course of treatment, little Chen Ziyue has also developed deep bonds with hospital staff members like Tong Qian, Yan Jun, and Wang Cong. Whether it’s the nurses or the rehabilitation physicians, they always greet him warmly by his nickname, no matter how busy they are. Whenever they have a moment, they stop by his room to check in, often bringing a piece of candy or a small toy. “This one, this one, and that one—those are all gifts the nurses gave Chen Ziyue; he loves them so much and plays with them every day,” his mother says, pointing to several toys on the windowsill. The daily acupuncture and massage sessions can be tedious and somewhat uncomfortable. During acupuncture, the child often resists and sometimes cries, but the doctors remain remarkably patient. They frequently come up with creative ways to cheer him up, sometimes even bringing little presents. This positive interaction has earned the child’s trust and cooperation, allowing each therapy session to proceed in a relaxed and enjoyable manner. In addition, the medical team provides hands-on guidance to family members, teaching them essential caregiving skills and techniques such as massage. At the same time, anticipating the child’s ongoing rehabilitation needs, the staff actively gathers cutting-edge expertise and best practices from across the field and promptly shares this information with the family, ensuring they receive timely, reliable support for their loved one’s recovery.

　　“With superb medical skills, they can work miracles; with unwavering dedication and a strong sense of responsibility, they uphold the highest standards of medical ethics. ‘Thank you for your trust and support. Give us time—and give Chen Ziyue time as well. I’m confident that this young patient will make an even fuller recovery!’” As he accepted the banner, Director Pan Xingming said to Chen Ziyue’s family with absolute confidence.

　　“Since Chen Ziyue fell ill, our whole family has been through a terrible ordeal. When we first transferred him to Zijin Hospital, we were all deeply worried. But thanks to the rehabilitation treatment he’s received over this period, the doctors and medical staff have given us real hope for his recovery. We’re truly grateful to them,” Chen Ziyue’s mother confided to us.
