Since the onset of winter, due to a combination of factors—including fluctuating temperatures and the ongoing COVID‑19 pandemic—Nanjing has been facing an acute shortage of blood supplies. As one of the first medical institutions in Nanjing in 2023 to launch a large‑scale blood‑donation drive, Nanjing Zijin Hospital has stepped up without hesitation, taking the lead in this vital effort.

　　As an outstanding individual in voluntary blood donation in Nanjing, President Ge Jiangping has led Nanjing Zijin Hospital to earn the title of “Advanced Collective in Voluntary Blood Donation” on two occasions.

　　“Although Zijin Hospital is a rehabilitation hospital, it primarily admits critically ill patients—patients undergoing intensive rehabilitation—who require substantial amounts of blood. I have always believed that, despite being a private hospital, we should nonetheless strive to fulfill our social responsibilities.” Compared with other groups, the staff of Zijin Hospital are acutely aware of the vital importance of blood and of the responsibilities and obligations they bear.

　　Guided by staff at the Nanjing Red Cross Blood Center, the “Ziyi people” proceeded in an orderly manner through blood donation registration, blood sample collection, screening and waiting, and the actual act of donating. Though their faces were obscured by masks, the warmth radiating from their eyes was unmistakable. Within each crimson‑filled blood bag, swelling gradually, flowed the hope of life.

　　“I feel in good health and hope to set a positive example,” said Nurse Supervisor Kong Lingling of the Jiangning Campus, who is marking her fourteenth year of donating blood. As a dedicated “passionate donor,” Nurse Kong, along with staff members at Nanjing Zijin Hospital, eagerly responded to the call and signed up enthusiastically upon learning of this year’s blood‑donation drive.

　　Among the blood donors, there are both “new recruits” making their first donation and “veterans” who have been donating consistently for many years.

　　As a nurse named Wang Na, known as the “Shining Silver,” after this blood donation, her cumulative total surpassed 8,000 cc in her 13th year of donating, earning her the title of “Glorious Gold.” Speaking to reporters, Wang Na said, “When I was in school, my father often donated blood—perhaps I was inspired by him. After completing my studies in nursing and medicine, I came to believe that donating blood does no harm to one’s health and can, in turn, help others.” This steadfast commitment and selfless dedication stem not only from professional confidence but also from the empowering example set by those who came before.

　　Among the volunteers at the Qinhuai Campus, Dr. Xu Weihai is also a seasoned veteran. “As a healthcare professional, donating blood has become an integral part of my life. With blood banks currently facing critical shortages, I feel it is my duty to step up and give.” In addition to blood donation, Dr. Xu has also joined the Chinese Marrow Donor Program. The selfless spirit of the “Ziyi people” is vividly reflected in Dr. Xu’s resolute gaze and warm, reassuring smile.

　　In addition to the medical staff, colleagues from other departments at Nanjing Zijin Hospital have also eagerly joined the ranks of blood donors. This year marks Cui Dingquan’s third year with the Zijin Hospital family—and his third time participating in a blood‑donation drive. As a finance professional, he says, “I donate because I care; it’s also our way of expressing love for the hospital and for society.” In just these few words, one can sense their heartfelt sincerity and their commitment to making a difference.

　　“Before donating blood, we place great emphasis on two key steps: first, the donor must assess that they have fully recovered to a condition comparable to their pre-infection state; second, we rigorously evaluate whether the donor meets all eligibility criteria, paying particular attention to symptoms such as colds, palpitations, or shortness of breath. While we encourage everyone to participate in voluntary blood donation, we also treat the health of our donors as our top priority,” said Dai Yudong, Deputy Director and member of the Party Committee at the Nanjing Red Cross Blood Center, when addressing the issue of blood donation after recovering from COVID‑19.

　　A total of more than 100 people signed up for this blood donation drive, with 82 participants successfully donating. The overall blood volume collected was 26,400 ml, including 64 donors who gave 300 ml and 18 donors who gave 400 ml. Following the Spring Festival, Nanjing Zijin Hospital will continue to organize voluntary blood donation events.
