Recently, a paper titled “How somatosensory evoked potentials improve the diagnosis of the disturbance of consciousness: A retrospective analysis” by the rehabilitation therapy team at Nanjing Zijin Hospital was published in the latest issue of the international journal Network: Computation in Neural Systems.

The journal has an impact factor of 7.8. (Impact factor has now become a universally accepted metric for evaluating journals. It not only measures a journal’s usefulness and visibility but also serves as an important indicator of its academic standing and, by extension, the quality of the papers it publishes.)

In the paper, assessments of consciousness disorders in the patient cohort were conducted using both the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and the Chinese Nanjing Persistent Vegetative State Scale (CNPVSS). The CNPVSS was developed by a team of senior experts in the field of brain resuscitation, initiated by Nanjing Zijin Hospital, and has been in clinical use for 26 years.

To further align with the concepts outlined in the latest national standards and domestic clinical guidelines, and to meet the pressing needs of clinical practice, in 2023, with strong support from the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the editorial board of the Journal of Naval Medicine and Hyperbaric Medicine, Nanjing Zijin Hospital—Nanjing’s first tertiary rehabilitation hospital with more than 20 years of clinical experience using the CNPVSS scale—hosted a workshop to revise the scale. Building on the CNPVSS, the revised CNCRS (China Nanjing Coma Recovery Scale) was developed and released. The trial version of this scale has now been published in relevant journals and has begun to be applied in clinical settings.
